becoming familiar with a wide variety of books and authors from different time periods and places?

If any of this sounds like a magical literary dream, I want you to know that it’s 100% possible for you. I am here to help, inspire and motivate you to become your best reading self!

This is your transformation:

YOU GO FROM THIS:

Average reader with a lack of time or motivation to read more.

You feel stuck in your reading life.

You feel intimidated by books outside of your comfort zone, such as classics.

TO THIS:

Confident and creative reader with intellectual autonomy, supported and inspired by your mentor and an international literary community.

Familiar with a wide variety of texts and authors in different genres, with an expanded literary repertoire.

Knowledgeable reader with creative skills and strategies to read and engage with books outside of your comfort zone.

Why is the course called The Creative Reader Academy?

The Creative Reader Academy is a 6-module program that teaches you how to engage more meaningfully with the books you read, expanding your literary repertoire and confidence. This program is unique as by joining it you become part of an amazing literature community of book lovers around the world. You will receive regular invitations for Zoom sessions to discuss live specific texts or literary themes so that you can continue expanding your literary repertoire and challenging yourself as a reader.

I use the term creative reading to refer to this special way of interacting with literary texts, which combines active strategies of critical reading with the imaginative essence of creative writing.

In other words, a creative reader combines the best of both worlds: critical reading + creative writing.

By the end of the program, you’ll…

Develop intellectual autonomy.

Feel confident to read books from different time periods, places and cultures.

Know how to read books in context.

And much, much more! You will never read the same way again!

Look at what members of the Academy have to say:

Being a part of Books and Culture has helped awaken a part of my mind and passion for literature that has been asleep. I have recently taken part in the Creative Reader Academy, the Jane Austen Club, as well as the guided reading of Sense and Sensibility. Fernanda has helped me gain confidence as a creative reader and as somebody who appreciates literature, she has helped me look at reading in a different light. Through her guidance I have achieved one of my lifelong dreams of obtaining employment in a bookstore. She is a dedicated teacher, very insightful and always patient, furthermore she is a lovely person who shows a deep understanding of literary genres, and it is evident that she cares for her students. Fernanda has a sunny disposition which many lecturers in the literary field lack, this encourages you to become excited about classic literature. Through these programs I have learned so much more about myself than I had expected, I have unlocked a potential that had laid dormant. I encourage anybody that loves books, that loves reading and writing to fully immerse themselves in the courses that Books and Culture offer - I think you will find that you will learn more than what Fernanda has promised.

Miche’ (South Africa)

I'll happily continue my literary journey with you and the community, and I'll never forget how generous you were to admit me into the The Creative Reader Academy. Can't thank you enough for that gesture!!

Also, for helping with the classics of course! That's something I discovered about myself. Even though I may not read many of them yet, I CAN read those books! I became comfortable with them, and I finally found myself going out of my comfort zone. I feel more confident to explore other genres now.

My best wishes to you and the Books and Culture Community. May you continue to spread the love for books, gather many book lovers through your passion and grow towards building an international community.

Looking forward to many new things.

This is what you'll learn:

 MODULE ONE

Why do we love reading?

In this module we are going to reflect on why we love reading, the importance of reading actively, why and how to read outside of your literary comfort zone, and why we should think outside the box when talking about literary genres.

In module one, you’re going to:

    • Read examples of the devotion to books written by poets and authors in different periods of time, reflecting on the potential benefits that books bring to a reader's life.
    • Learn the definition of creative reading and why it is important to read creatively.
    • Learn how to identify your reading comfort zones, and know when and how you should challenge yourself as a reader.
    • Learn about different genres of literary texts, and why such categorizations can be limiting.

 MODULE TWO

Elements of Fiction

In this module we are going to talk about the 5 main elements of fiction that are part of (almost) every story. We will look at examples of extracts from different literary texts by a variety of authors to understand and illustrate these concepts.

In module two, you’re going to:

    • Learn about different narrator types and narrative styles.
    • Learn about the importance of characterization in literary texts, types of characters, points of view and focalization.
    • Learn what a plot is, as well as be able to identify different narratological techniques to frame a story within a plot.
    • Read fascinating literature examples of how authors construct time and space within narratives, becoming aware of how they affect the characters in the story as well as your experience as a reader.

 MODULE THREE

The importance of context(s)

In this module we are going to talk about the importance of reading literary texts in context. We will also see how there are several contextual variants that should be considered when reading a text, such as historical context, social context, cultural context, ideological context, aesthetic context, amongst others.

In module three, you’re going to:

    • Study five specific case studies in order to understand the importance of reading books in context: Henry James' The Bostonians (1886), Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice (1813), Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's Americanah (2013), George Orwell's 1984 (1949) and Ann Radcliffe's A Sicilian Romance (1790).
    • Discuss five themes in relation to context: women's suffrage, marriage in Regency England, cultural identity, politics, the sublime and the Gothic.
    • Read extracts from the novels mentioned above, expanding your literary repertoire and familiarizing yourself with a diversity of authors and texts.

Types of Literary Texts

In this module we are going to talk about the four main ways in which a story can be told: prose, poetry, drama and non-fiction. We'll discuss the main characteristics of each type of text and read extracts from a variety of authors as examples.

In module four, you’re going to:

    • Learn the main elements that characterize prose, poetical, dramatic and nonfictional texts, as well as subgenres within each main category: short stories, novels, fairy tales, sonnets, comedies, tragedies, history plays, essays and (auto)biographies.
    • Read examples from a wide variety of literary sources to better visualize and internalize the concepts and literary terms.
    • Read one essay by the author Virginia Woolf and reflect on how the language differs from fictional literary writing.

 MODULE FIVE

Engaging critically, actively and creatively with the literary text

    • Learn annotation and study techniques that will help you better memorize the texts you read and will allow you to converse with your books.

 MODULE SIX

Revisiting Old Friends

In this module we are going to talk about the power of re-reading, and how your reading notes can become a connecting bridge between the you from now with the you from the past. You will also know how to continue your literary growth on your own, bringing with you all the knowledge acquired in The Creative Reader Academy.

Look at what our students say:

Would you recommend this course to another book lover?

Yes definitely! I would tell them that it’s a really interesting course, the teacher is very nice and very helpful, and is great at explaining the modules. The course was also an eye opener for me, especially in week one learning my comfort zone, and the last week revisiting new friends, as I don’t usually re-read books, but will do now. I would warn them that they will add numerous books to their ‘To Be Read’ pile! Overall the course was obviously well thought out and delivered in an easy manner, which made learning fun.

The course definitely did what it set out to do, and has made me a more creative reader ! I feel more confident now to read books outside my comfort zone.

Reading can often seem like something that you do by yourself, but this way you can share your reading process with others and learn from each other.

I had a lovely time following this course and would like to thank you for all your hard work!
